Trent Alexander-Arnold’s assist against Barcelona was a remarkable moment last season, but his manager didn’t even see it.
In a wonderful article written for The Players’ Tribune, Jurgen Klopp discussed a number of topics, from the Rocky movies to Christianity.
The German also revealed that he didn’t even see Alexander-Arnold brilliantly tee-up Divock Origi for the tie-clinching goal in the Champions League semi-final, sending the Reds to Madrid:
Unfortunately, the most incredible moment in the history of the Champions League… I didn’t actually see it.
Maybe this is a good metaphor for the life of a football manager, I don’t know. But I completely missed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s moment of pure genius.
I saw the ball go out for a corner. I saw Trent walking over to take it. I saw Shaqiri following him.
But then I turned my back because we were preparing to make a substitution. I was talking to my assistant, and … you know, I have goose bumps every time I think about it … I just heard the noise.
I turned to the pitch and I saw the ball flying into the goal.

For all the goals Klopp had to miss, it’s incredible that he never witnessed such a remarkable moment in the flesh – the best of last season.
Alexander-Arnold’s stunning assist will rightly go down as one of the most memorable and unique in Liverpool’s history, with such quick thinking and technical brilliance on show.
It also sums up the human aspect of Klopp that he missed it, much like a few fans inside Anfield no doubt did, considering Alexander-Arnold’s speed of thought.
Klopp’s article is a fantastic read for any Liverpool supporter, showing what a great person he is, as well as a special manager.
The Reds could not be in better hands – the 52-year-old is the perfect man to lead this club forward, hopefully for many years to come.
