Klopp reveals what he told his Liverpool players before Barcelona miracle

Jurgen Klopp says he told his Liverpool players to imagine the ‘best game you’ve ever played’, prior to their miracle comeback against Barcelona.

The Reds won 4-0 at home to the Liga giants in the Champions League semi-final second leg at Anfield last season, having lost 3-0 at the Nou Camp.

It was arguably the greatest night Anfield has ever staged, with Liverpool going on to clinch European glory in Madrid.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Klopp revealed how he made his players believe they could still go through against Barca:

I said two things to the boys. One, it’s impossible – but because it’s you, we have a chance. And: I want everybody to close your eyes for 10 or 15 seconds. Imagine the best game you’ve ever played.

That’s exactly the game we have to play tonight. And then the boys played that game.

When we look back on Klopp’s time as Liverpool manager, I believe that win over Barca will be the biggest of the lot, in many ways.

Had they gone out, it would have meant another year without a trophy, adding to the growing feeling that the Reds were nearly men.

Instead, they pulled off the impossible and I think it has helped create an unrivalled winning mentality with Klopp and his players.

It is one of the best wins in Liverpool’s history – to overcome any side featuring Lionel Messi, after losing 3-0 in the first leg, is bordering on unfathomable.
