Leipzig joke that Werner could join Tottenham this summer

RB Leipzig have jokingly stated that Timo Werner is Tottenham-bound, rather than Liverpool, but there is more to the story than meets the eye.

The Reds have been tipped to sign the 23-year-old throughout this season, with new claims from Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk confirming the club’s interest in him.

Responding to a tweet reporting the news on Wednesday, Leipzig’s official account brilliantly replied, saying:

This is, of course, in response to the fact that Leipzig play Tottenham in the Champions League last 16, where Werner is expected to play a key role in both legs in the coming weeks.

Werner would be a fantastic signing by Liverpool, in my opinion, bringing him an endless stream of goals – 25 already this season – hard work and versatility.

While it is hard to envisage the striker fitting into a team that already has Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in it, there could be a solution.

Jurgen Klopp could revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation he used in the first half of last season, playing Firmino in a No.10 role, allowing Werner to lead the line.

The likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum have become hugely important players, so disrupting the balance in the middle of the park would be a risk.

Acquiring Werner could bring some more quality to the squad, and could be a very good move considering that both Salah and Mane will head to the Africa Cup of Nations next January.
