Virgil van Dijk has been paid an enormous compliment, with Vincent Kompany calling him the best defender in Premier League history.
The Manchester City legend revealed his thoughts on Wednesday, according to The Athletic’s Sam Lee on Twitter.
It’s a bold statement from Kompany, whose testimonial takes place on Wednesday evening, with James Milner taking part.
These Liverpool and City fans have been reacting to the Belgian’s quotes on Twitter – unsurprisingly, the responses are chalk and cheese.

Read Liverpool Verdict
For someone of Kompany’s stature to pay such high praise to Van Dijk proves what a remarkable footballer he is.
The Dutchman may not have been at the top for as long as others, such as Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Kompany himself, but his performances have been unrivalled in the past 18 months.
A likely Ballon d’Or win later this year will only enhance his legend, as he continues to thrive at Liverpool.
It’s no surprise to see the meltdown among City supporters, considering the fake off-pitch rivalry they have created with the Reds, but Kompany may well be spot on.
At the end of the day, opinion will always differ, such is the subjective nature of football.
