Liverpool once agreed personal terms with Teddy Sheringham, prior to him joining Manchester United.
That’s according to The Athletic‘s Simon Hughes, who claims the former England striker was considered too old for the Reds back in 1997, putting paid to a transfer happening.
Instead, Sheringham joined United, becoming a key man at Old Trafford and winning the treble in 1998/99.

In hindsight, Liverpool’s decision not to sign Sheringham was a dreadful one, considering what happened next in his career.
He was admittedly 31 at the time, but his game never relied on pace and he was a hugely intelligent player, as he showed during a long and successful career for club and country.
Sheringham could have been the perfect foil for Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen during the late 1990s by dropping deep and linking up play.
I believe Liverpool may even have won a Premier League title with him in the attack, such was his quality at that time.
It was a decision that I feel summed up the Reds during that period, at a time when too many transfers didn’t work and United were nailing their business down the M62.
