Liverpool at the World Cup: Matchday 1

Liverpool players far and wide are involved in this summer’s World Cup in Russia. Yesterday’s meeting between Sadio Mane’s Senegal and Poland drew a close to the first round of fixtures during the group stages, with Russia kicking off the second round of games.

With so much football on at the moment, it can hard to keep track of them, so we’ve put together a comprehensive summary of how all Liverpool players performed during the first round of fixtures at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In Group A, Mo Salah was unable to feature in Egypt’s World Cup opener as he had not recovered from the shoulder injury he suffered in the Champions League final. His Egypt side lost to Uruguay 1-0. No Liverpool players are in Group B or C.

Group D saw the next Liverpool player to debut at this World Cup and it was Croatia’s Dejan Lovren. The central defender started his country’s 2-0 win over Nigeria, with his side now in a strong position to progress from the group.

Marko Grujic was an unused substitute as Serbia gained a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in the Group E opener. Roberto Firmino was a 79th-minute substitute as Brazil could only draw 1-1 to Switzerland. He had a header well saved by Swiss ‘keeper Yann Sommer.

Simon Mignolet was not used by Belgium for their 3-0 Group F victory against Panama, with Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois preferred. It was then time for Liverpool’s English boys. Jordan Henderson was named in the starting XI for England’s dramatic 2-1 win over Tunisia and he put in a stellar performance. Tottenham’s Kieran Trippier got the nod at right-wing back over Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the former going on to be one of England’s better performers on the night.

The final Liverpool player to take his bow was Mane of Senegal. The Senegalese captain played the full 90 minutes as his nation recorded a well deserved 2-1 win against Poland. The latter were heavily tipped as the favourites for the group and the win gives Senegal a great chance to move into the next round.
