Liverpool dealt blow as Havertz could sign new Leverkusen deal

Kai Havertz could sign a new deal with Bayer Leverkusen, according to Kicker, via Inside Futbol.

The 20-year-old has been one of several big names linked with Liverpool this summer, following another good season in the Bundesliga.

Havertz has continued to grow at Leverkusen, scoring six goals in the league, as well as bagging five assists.

It could be that the midfielder stays put at Leverkusen for another season, then moving on in the summer of 2021 instead, with his contract containing a release clause.

While on the face of it, this could be treated as a blow to Liverpool, I could see a scenario where he joins next year. Havertz would still only be 22 by that point, having matured even further as a player.

At the moment, Jurgen Klopp has a wealth of options in the middle of the park, but the Reds need to keep one eye on the future and that area of the pitch will need freshening up sooner rather than later.

Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum will be 31 and 30 in the summer of 2021, with lots of running in their legs, so it may be that Havertz it’s a greater necessity at that point compared to next season.

If he was to sign this summer, there is no guarantee that he could feature regularly, with the likes of Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also battling for playing time.
