Liverpool fans hail defensive record after seven clean-sheets in a row

Liverpool’s incredible Premier League this season continued on Sunday, after beating Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield.

While the Reds might not be scoring goals at a particularly rapid rate, their defensive expertise has come to the fore.

Sunday’s clean-sheet means Jurgen Klopp’s side haven’t conceded in the league since the 5-2 win over Everton on December 4th.

That means seven clean-sheets have been recorded in a row – something that hasn’t been achieved for more than a decade in the top flight, when United kept 14 in succession in 2008/09.

On top of that, only 14 goals have hit the Liverpool net in the league this season – eight fewer than any other team.

These Liverpool supporters have been reacting to the statistic on Twitter, lauding the champions in waiting.

Read Liverpool Verdict

I think this is Liverpool’s best defence of the Premier League era, even though the Reds also shone in that area under Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez.

In Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson, Liverpool have a back-line that is largely immaculate – Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren also deserve praise – and one that is young enough to be together for many years.

They are quick, strong, consistent and hugely talented and their current run of not conceding goals is no fluke.

Van Dijk holds the key, in my opinion, but Gomez has also been outstanding since returning to the team.

Meanwhile, Alisson is faultless in goal and Alexander-Arnold and Robertson are unrivalled at full-back, I believe, admittedly more so in an attacking sense.

Everyone talks about Liverpool’s attacking brilliance, but I think the defence should be earning the bulk of the praise right now.
