Liverpool Goalkeeper Loris Karius To Join Union Berlin

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is set to join German Bundesliga side Union Berlin on loan this week, as confirmed by The Athletic’s James Pearce.

The 27-year-old German stopper hasn’t played competitively for the Reds since that fateful night in Kyiv when he was inadvertently at fault for two of Real Madrid’s goals in the UEFA Champions League final.

After enjoying a mixed two-year loan spell with Turkish side Besiktas, the ‘keeper, who was signed by Jurgen Klopp to be Liverpool’s number one in 2016, is set to return to Germany.

Karius arrived at Anfield from Mainz 05, Klopp’s former club as both a player and a manager, with a hope of becoming Liverpool’s long-term first-choice goalkeeper, however, with Alisson now at the front of a long queue of goalkeepers at the club, Karius’ Liverpool future is all but over.

Still just 27, Karis certainly has time to prove himself as a top-level goalkeeper once more, although that will not be on Merseyside with perhaps too much water passing under the bridge as the Premier League champions advance.

The details of the deal have not yet been fully announced but an option to buy being included would come as little surprise. Despite the failings of that infamous night in particular, we wish Karius all the best for his future.
