Liverpool will be in pot three for the Champions League draw on Thursday after Benfica beat PAOK 4-1 on Wednesday night.
If PAOK had beaten Benfica, Liverpool would have been placed in pot 2 for the draw.
This will come as a blow to Liverpool, who could potentially now face a much harder group when they are revealed tomorrow night.
The Champions League draw starts at 7pm UK time on Thursday, with Liverpool now knowing their pot.
Liverpool reached the final of the Champions League last season, only to lose 3-1 to Real Madrid in Kiev.
Jurgen Klopp will be hoping for a similar run this season, albeit they would prefer to lift the trophy at the end of it.
The worst outcome, arguably, on paper for Liverpool would be to draw Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan in their group.
