Liverpool Player Ratings: Atletico Madrid (H)

Defending champions Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League after losing the second leg of the last-16 tie 3-2 at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish side went through with an aggregate scoreline of 4-2.

Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino gave the Reds a two-goal advantage, but the away side got their goals through Marcus Llorente and Alvaro Morata to send them into the quarter-finals.

After a dominant first 40 minutes where Liverpool dominated the ball, they eventually broke the deadlock on the night when Wijnaldum headed in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross.

Most of the second half was played in one area, with Jurgen Klopp’s men having chance after chance to extend their lead on the night, however, Atleti keeper Jan Oblak made some crucial saves.

Coming into the first half of extra-time, Wijnaldum’s driving run and cross was met by Firmino’s header that hit the bar. The Brazilian was alert to tap in the rebound and give the Reds an aggregate lead for the first time.

Then, in the space of four minutes, Atleti scored twice, both coming from Llorente. The first came from an Adrian mistake and the second was a good counter-attacking move from Diego Simeone’s men.

They made it 3-2 on the night with virtually the last kick of the game when Morata scored.

All in all, a disappointing night for Liverpool despite playing so well.

Here’s how we rated the Reds…
