Liverpool player ratings: Brighton (H)

10-man Liverpool hung on and blocked off a late charge from Brighton to win the game 2-1 at Anfield and stretch the lead back to 11 points at the top of the table.

Virgil van Dijk’s brace headed the Reds into a commanding 2-0 at half-time, but Alisson’s sending off and Lewis Dunk’s goal in the 79th minute made it a nervy finish for all parties.

After a fast start from the home side, they took the lead in the 18th minute, when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s set-piece delivery found van Dijk’s head. The Dutchman did well to guide his header into the back of the net.

The lead was doubled six minute later, this time Trent serving the goal for van Dijk via a corner. The header from the centre-back was once again superb.

Liverpool had other opportunities to kill the game off by the hour mark, but their finishing wasn’t up to the scratch. Then, in the 78th minute, Alisson handled the ball outside the box and was rightly sent off. Adrian came in goal and was caught out by a quick free-kick from Dunk.

Jurgen Klopp’s men hung on in the last 10 minutes and managed to sneak out a win.
