Liverpool couldn’t get out of first gear and were held to a 1-1 draw by a stubborn Napoli at Anfield in a frustrating Champions League night on Wednesday.
Dries Mertens and Dejan Lovren were the scorers for the sides in either half to settle things up.
After a slow start to the game by the home side where they lacked rhythm, Mertens ran clean through on goal after a ball over the top and rifled his effort past Alisson.
It was checked by VAR to have a look at a foul on Virgil van Dijk and subsequent offside, but the goal stood.
Liverpool didn’t wake up in the game until they scored an equaliser in the 65th minute via Lovren’s header from a James Milner corner.
They didn’t create enough chances after that to really put Napoli under pressure.
