On Thursday, Premier League leaders Liverpool confirmed the signing of Takumi Minamino from RB Salzburg.
The Japanese international put in some impressive displays against the Reds during this season’s UEFA Champions League group stages and he will officially be eligible to play for Jurgen Klopp’s side on 1st January 2020.

However, the signing of Minamino has put a stop to Liverpool’s pursuit of Bundesliga hotshot Timo Werner, according to a report on the Daily Star.
Werner is in incredible goalscoring form. He has found the net 23 times in 24 appearances in all competitions this season, helping RB Leipzig to the top of the Bundesliga and through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
German football expert Raphael Honigstein said:
I was probably expecting Liverpool to make a move for Timo Werner. He could have been the fourth guy, but it didn’t happen.
Minamino is a lot cheaper but perhaps also has more value in terms of the improvement and the places he can go.

As a goalscorer, there’s probably nobody on the planet at the moment as good as Werner, but in terms of overall impact, Minamino could be the better option.
His versatility is what will be key for Liverpool as he can operate anywhere along the frontline and is always ready to work his socks off.
He’s also a lot cheaper than Werner, who could command a fee of over £100m by the end of the season. All in all, it seems to be a good decision from the Reds. Whether it actually is or not, we’ll have to wait and see.
