Liverpool tracking RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner

Liverpool are monitoring the progress of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, according to Abendzeitung.

The Reds are believed to have sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old in action against Borussia Monchengladbach last month – a game in which he scored twice in a 2-0 win.

Werner has been linked with a switch to Anfield in the past but it ended up being nothing more than speculation.

He headed into last summer’s World Cup as one of the most talked about young players in the competition, only to struggle badly in Russia.

Werner failed to score as Germany crashed out in the group stages and his stock dropped because of it.

The lively Leipzig man is still maturing, however, and he has responded well with 14 goals in 21 appearances this season.

Many Liverpool supporters feel improvements can be made in terms of quality and depth in attack, with Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi arguably not quite at the level required as backups to Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Werner would fit the bit perfectly, with his work-rate and versatility something that would appeal to Klopp.

It is one to keep an eye on, more likely in the summer than January.
