Liverpool wanted to sign Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona until the end of the season.
According to The Mirror, Liverpool attempted to negotiate a loan move for Coutinho as part of his record move.
Coutinho completed his medical on Monday morning after it was announced over the weekend that the two clubs reached an agreement over the move.
The Brazilian is now set to officially complete his £142m transfer to Barcelona this week, smashing the British transfer record.

It also smashes Barcelona’s transfer record, after they paid roughly £128m for Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
Coutinho has signed a five-and-a-half year contract with Barcelona, with the Spanish side including a £345m buy-out clause in his contract.
The report claims that Liverpool were hoping to keep Coutinho until the end of the season, but he was set on his dream move to the La Liga leaders.
Coutinho could make his debut for Barcelona in the coming weeks.
