Liverpool willing to offer Chirivella contract extension

Liverpool are ‘prepared’ to offer Pedro Chirivella a contract extension, according to the Daily Mail‘s Dominic King on Twitter.

The 22-year-old was superb in Sunday’s 1-0 victory at home to Everton, bossing matters in the middle of the park.

Chirivella has almost been a joke figure at times, due to his inability to leave Liverpool and the fact he is still playing for the Under-23s, but he appears to be valued at the club.

King claims the decision has been made to ‘reward the further progress he has made’ this season, having also impressed in the Carabao Cup.

Chirivella’s current deal expires at the end of the season, so a decision needs to be made swiftly.

The Spaniard impressed so much against Everton, whether it be his quality on the ball or his work-rate.

His stock has arguably never been higher, and having appeared surplus to requirements at one point, he now looks like he could be a handy squad player to have around.

Chirivella may go in search of more regular first-team football, however, and it would be hard to begrudge him that, should that be his choice.

All in all, it’s difficlut to see the Spaniard surpassing the sheer number of midfielders that Liverpool have in their pecking order, so his game time would likely be pretty infrequent if he does stay, as he’s only featured in cup ties for the Reds this season as Jurgen Klopp has rung the changes.

Tying Chirivella down to a new contract in order to protect his value in a transfer does make sense, but, in my opinion, the player might be best moving on to play regular first-team football, whether that be on a free transfer or if he agrees to a new deal then goes out on loan or gets sold.
