Lovren set to stay at Liverpool beyond January

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has decided that he does not want to sell Dejan Lovren in the January transfer window.

According to Football Insider, Klopp has changed his mind on Lovren after being willing to let him go over the summer.

The report claims that Klopp was ready to sell Lovren for £20m in the summer, but negotiations with Roma broke down before he was able to leave. Liverpool will now make a decision on Lovren’s long-term future at Anfield at the end of the season.

It seems to be a sensible move from Klopp, given that Lovren has broken back into the starting XI in recent matches. With Joel Matip out injured, Lovren has been able to string together a run of games at centre-back alongside Virgil Van Dijk. He has been solid in the matches he has played, which is sure to have cemented Klopp’s decision not to let him go in January.

Klopp will now be hoping that Lovren can repay his faith and continue to impress at the back for the Reds throughout the rest of the season. The Croatian will need to be at his very best to keep his place in the side once Matip returns from injury, such has been Matip’s influence at Anfield over the past 18 months or so.
