Liverpool will be looking for a third consecutive Champions League win on Tuesday evening as they welcome Genk to Anfield for their fourth match in this year’s competition.
Liverpool hammered Genk 4-1 when the sides met in Belgium last week, thanks to two excellent goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, plus strikes from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah and those who keep up to date with Champions League odds will be aware that the Reds are huge favourites to win the home game over Genk.
The Reds lost their opening group game away to Napoli, but have since beaten Red Bull Salzburg and Genk to position themselves in second place in Group E, one point behind the Serie A side.
A home win for the reigning European champions, coupled with an expected home win for Napoli against Salzburg, will leave the Reds needing just a point from their remaining two games in order to secure a place in the knockout stages for a third consecutive year.
Any slip up against Genk, however, could open the door for Salzburg, so Liverpool, whilst potentially having one eye one the following weekend’s massive home game against Manchester City, will need to be fully focused on the job in hand before they let their attention switch to the visit of Pep Guardiola’s side.
Jurgen Klopp is likely to rotate his side with Liverpool playing Aston Villa, Genk and Man City all in the space of eight days before the international break, so it will be interesting to see if the likes of Divock Origi, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are given starts against Genk, giving some other players a well-earned rest ahead of the clash with City.
Whichever team Klopp selects should be good enough to beat Genk and anything less than three points from the game will be seen as a major disappointment for the European champions.
