Joel Matip has enjoyed a fantastic 2019 at Liverpool, having looked surplus to requirements this time last year.
The 28-year-old benefited from an injury to Joe Gomez and the patchy form of Dejan Lovren, becoming a regular alongside Virgil van Dijk last season.
Matip was arguably Liverpool’s best player in the Champions League final win over Tottenham and continued that form into this campaign, prior to picking up a knee injury.
The Cameroonian was seen hilariously pumping the air with his fists as Liverpool celebrated their European triumph back in June – a moment that endeared him to many supporters.
Speaking to LiverpoolFC.com, Matip admits he can laugh at himself in such situations, never taking himself too seriously:
There was no special plan for it. It’s funny and I think I make a lot of people laugh, so it’s not too bad.
I can laugh about myself, that’s absolutely no problem. I’m looking at this and I say, ‘Ah, that’s quite funny’.
If somebody else would do it, I would also laugh. I would have no problem to laugh about me.
I can laugh about some things when other people do something, but I can also laugh about myself.

Matip is one of the many hugely likeable players to represent the Reds currently, always appearing humble.
His Anfield resurrection has been so pleasing and he is a big miss through injury at the moment.
Liverpool continue to thrive without him, but they have looked far more secure with him in the team this year.
