Mignolet happy with home draw

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is delighted that the Reds will play at Anfield in the Capital One Cup third round.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been handed a home tie against League Two side Carlisle United, and will play in the week commencing September 21.

It will be the first time the two sides have met in the competition, having last met way back in 1989 in the FA Cup third round.

Being drawn at home has pleased the Belgian and so has the number of Premier League teams facing one another.

Mignolet told Liverpoolfc.com:

You’re always happy when you’ve got a home game. I think that’s the best thing.

“When I saw the other Premier League teams that were drawn against each other, that’s always good. We’re happy with that and now we want to progress into the next round.”

Last season Brendan Rodgers guided Liverpool to the semi-finals of the competition but were unable to overcome Chelsea.

The Reds were also knocked out in the last four of the FA Cup at the hands of Aston Villa.

Liverpool last lifted the League Cup in 2012 and were then managed by club legend, Kenny Dalglish.

Mignolet insists that last year’s heartbreak will only make the team more determined to win a trophy this season.

“That comes with the tradition of the club,” he continued.

I’ve said it from the start – the ambition here is to try to win every competition we start in.

“That only comes by winning the individual games step by step, so we’ll have to get through the third round. The first job in hand is Carlisle at home.”
