Henrikh Mkhitaryan has revealed that he came close to joining Liverpool and Tottenham, prior to his move to Borussia Dortmund in 2013.
The Armenian is currently on loan at Roma, following failed spells at Manchester United and Arsenal.
Prior to joining Dortmund, however, the midfielder had the opportunity to move to England, but it never materialised.
Speaking to Siamo La Roma, as translated by Sport Witness, Mkhitaryan spoke about nearly joining Liverpool and Spurs, saying a lack of guaranteed regular football played a part in him saying no to both.
I left with Raiola for London, initially to speak with Tottenham. We were waiting for offers from Liverpool but we weren’t sure.
Then we received the call from Dortmund and immediately flew to Germany. They had sold Gotze and needed a new ‘number 10’.
At Liverpool and Tottenham the seats were already taken, so moving to Borussia was the best thing to do. Klopp immediately told me his ideas, where he saw me on the pitch.

Although Mkhitaryan was excellent for Dortmund, hindsight shows that he may not have been a good long-term signing for Liverpool.
When United purchased him in 2016, I was concerned that they had done a magnificent piece of business, but the 31-year-old never cut it in the Premier League.
The pace of the play seemed to pass him by and he managed just 13 league goals for United and Arsenal combined, suggesting that he peaked physically at Dortmund.
While Liverpool may have got a few good years out of him to begin with, bringing him in before the unforgettable 2013/14 season, his decline has proven to be rapid ever since.
