Only Man City can prevent Liverpool going 50 games unbeaten, claims Merson

Only Manchester City can prevent Liverpool going 50 Premier League matches unbeaten, according to Paul Merson.

The Reds are on a staggering run of form this season, winning 18 of their 19 games and drawing the other.

Jurgen Klopp’s men haven’t lost in the league since a 2-1 defeat at City almost a year ago, meaning they are unbeaten in 36 outings.

Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ went an incredible 49 fixtures without losing in 2003 and 2004, eventually falling short at Manchester United.

Liverpool’s 49th game would be away to City, and speaking to Sky Sports, Merson believes they are the only team who can stop them:

I haven’t heard one person talk about Liverpool getting near the 49 unbeaten of Arsenal. It’s never talked about, it’s odd. You look at it and think: ‘Who is going to beat them?’

You have to score two or three goals to beat them, and they won’t get beaten by a lesser team!

They might get beaten by a top-six team, at a push, but there won’t be a shock below that.

Their 49th game would be against Manchester City at the Etihad. Wow. I think they are the only side that can stop them.

What the Reds are doing at the moment is staggering, but Merson is right in saying their unbeaten run has gone under the radar.

All of a sudden, Arsenal’s record is not a million miles away, although there is still a huge amount of work to do.

It would be fitting for Liverpool to still be on this run when they go to the Etihad, however, looking to match the Gunners’ feat.
