Opinion: Sancho is tailor-made to thrive in the Premier League

Jadon Sancho has everything in his locker to thrive in England, according to Jamie Carragher and we too believe he is tailor-made for the Premier League.

The 19-year-old is expected to return to England, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City all linked with moves to sign him at the end of the season, while Barcelona are also keen.

Having spent three years at Borussia Dortmund, who he moved to from City in 2017, a fresh challenge awaits for Sancho.

One of the most exciting young attacking players in world football – he finished second in the 2019 Golden Boy stakes – whoever ends up getting their man will have a potential superstar on their hands.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has every faith in Sancho being a future great, telling the Sky Sports Football Weekend Preview Podcast about his long-term potential:

He’s an English player who I think will be desperate to come back, so I think he’ll be the hottest thing everyone in the Premier League will be looking to bring in.

Will he be a hit? I think so. It’s a no-brainer, look at how well he has played in a top league with a top club under pressure. He’s playing week in, week out, his numbers are fantastic and his age is just perfect.

You’re going to get a good player for 10 years there if you keep him at your club.

Carragher is spot on, which is why Liverpool acquiring his signature could be such a significant piece of business. While most young players can struggle in terms of end product early on in their career, Sancho is thriving.

He has scored 12 goals and registered 13 assists this season, in just 18 Bundesliga starts. Last season was similarly prolific, with 12 and 14 respectively. He also has two goals for England already, having appeared 11 times for his country to date.

He possesses blistering speed, eye-catching skills, but most importantly, he delivers when it matters. For a teenager to be doing that for one of Europe’s leading clubs speaks volumes.

An aspect of Sancho’s game remains raw, which is to be expected – his final ball still isn’t always on the money and performances can be inconsistent – but his numbers sum up his influence.

A bullish physical presence standing at five foot 11 inches tall – relatively tall for a winger of his ilk – the pace and power of the Premier League also shouldn’t be an issue to adjust to.

The Bundesliga is not dissimilar in terms of style, and when you see players of the size and stature of Mohamed Salah and Raheem Sterling, there is absolutely no reason why Sancho can’t thrive, too.

It is impossible to know where he will end up, but I deeply hope Liverpool are his next club. While it may sound biased, there couldn’t be a better option for him, in terms of playing under Jurgen Klopp and thriving alongside some world-class names.

At United, he would admittedly be the superstar, and a return to City could also appeal, but being a part of this Reds side should tickle the fancy of any player in world football right now.

Liverpool could end up seeing Sancho’s price tag as too steep, but they must consider paying over the odds on a player who could be at the very top for a decade, as Carragher has alluded to.

He is tailor-made to come straight in and take English football by storm.
