On this day: Liverpool beat Juventus on aggregate to reach Champions League semi-finals

On this day (13th April) 2005, Liverpool cruised out winners on aggregate against Italian giants Juventus to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

The Reds managed a 2-1 victory over the Old Lady at Anfield before going to Italy to fight out a 0-0 draw at the Stadio delle Alpi.

Many Liverpool fans will remember this season and this very run in the Champions League.

The victory over Juventus saw Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool face Chelsea in the semi-final in a game that will go down in the club’s history.

Luis Garcia’s ghost goal was the overriding memory from the game, which helped the Reds progress to the final in Istanbul.

Goals from Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer, and Xabi Alonso saw the Reds lift their fifth European cup against AC Milan.

The tournament that season was filled with ups and downs with the club struggling in the league but succeeding in Europe.

There are many juxtapositions from that season to this one, but one thing for sure is that the Reds will need to put all their focus on Wednesday.

Real Madrid will visit Anfield for the second leg of the quarter-final, with Jurgen Klopp’s men 3-1 down on aggregate.

If Liverpool hope to progress to the semi-finals, then the squad will have to do all they can to overcome the deficite.
