Pearce responds to claims that Liverpool could pursue Sterling reunion

James Pearce has laughed off claims linking Liverpool with a move to re-sign Raheem Sterling this summer.

The 25-year-old left the Reds back in 2015, opting to join Manchester City instead, where he now earns a whopping £300k a week.

Sterling has been linked with a sensational return to Anfield, however, due to City’s potential two-year European ban.

Writing for The Athletic, Pearce said there is simply no truth in the claims, brilliantly stating that there is ‘more chance of Lord Lucan riding into Anfield on Shergar’.

In truth, I don’t think a Sterling return ever felt feasible, considering the rivalry that has developed between Liverpool and City.

Pep Guardiola was surely never going to entertain the thought of him heading to Anfield – if he does move on, I could see it being to a European side such as Real Madrid, who he has also been linked with.

It is a shame that Sterling left so soon before Jurgen Klopp arrived, because he has everything in his armoury to have potentially excelled under the German, whether it be his pace, tactical intelligence, end product or versatility.

Liverpool didn’t do too badly in bringing in Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, though, and with both expected to stay put this summer, fitting Sterling into the team as well might have been difficult.
