Argh. The Reds.

Feels really harsh on us that we’ve come away from that with a defeat. It felt like we were playing for a 0-0 all night, right up until stoppage time when we got slightly carried away and left ourselves exposed.

Fair play to Villarreal. They got exactly what they set out to get – a lead to take back to Anfield.

It is a big ask for Liverpool to make it through to the final now, but nowhere near as big an ask as what was put in front of them at half-time against Borussia Dortmund. This one is far from over.

Should Daniel Sturridge have played a part? Probably. In fact I was really surprised that he didn’t get at least 15 minutes. But there is no doubt he’ll play next week. He absolutely has to.

After a decent performance and a result that’s tough to take, here are my player ratings from Estadio El Madrigal.

matchday.
