Redknapp: Liverpool wanted Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti was Liverpool’s first choice to take over from the sacked manager Brendan Rodgers, according to Harry Redknapp.

Rodgers, who took over at Anfield in June 2012, was dismissed by owners Fenway Sports Group following the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Everton last Sunday, which came on the back of several poor performances and results.

The following Thursday, Jurgen Klopp was named the new Liverpool boss, but Redknapp claims that the German was not who Liverpool wanted the most.

“I have heard from good sources that Ancelotti was offered the Liverpool job,” the 68-year-old told talkSPORT. “I don’t think he wanted it. They spoke to him at some stage.”

Redknapp does, though, think Klopp could be the right man to get Liverpool back on track.

“I do like the look of Klopp, he’s a good appointment,” he said.

“He looks bright, with great enthusiasm and he looks like he could be a really good addition to the Premier League.

“I’m looking forward to watching Liverpool play over the next few years.”

Liverpool have beaten the North London side in their last five meetings, including their last two trips to White Hart Lane, in which they won 5-0 (December 2013) and 3-0 (August 2014) respectively.

A win would take Klopp’s side above Spurs, who finished one place above the Reds last term.
