Rodgers wanted Williams and Bertrand at Liverpool – how would they have fared?

This weekend, Brendan Rodgers returns to Liverpool for the first time since being sacked as manager back in October 2015.

The 46-year-old takes his Leicester City side to Anfield on Saturday afternoon, looking to dent his former club’s Premier League title hopes.

In an article by The Athletic‘s James Pearce, which documents Rodgers’ time in charge of Liverpool, he claims the Ulsterman wanted to sign Ashley Williams and Ryan Bertrand:

No-one was ever brought in against Rodgers’ will but he was regularly frustrated by a process which meant he had to try to convince others that a target met the club’s requirements and was worth pursuing.

There were times he was blocked from signing his first pick. For example, he wanted Ashley Williams and Ryan Bertrand, but got Mamadou Sakho and Alberto Moreno.

Rodgers proved to be hit-and-miss in the transfer market during his time as Liverpool boss.

The likes of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge were inspired signings, but the likes of Mario Balotelli and Christian Benteke made little sense.

Williams and Bertrand would never have been good enough for the Reds, in truth, had they arrived.

The former proved to be a poor signing for Everton further down the line, while the latter is a good left-back, but not a top class one.

In fairness to Bertrand, he may have been a better option than Alberto Moreno, though.
