Rose admits surprise at Liverpool fans’ “dislike” for Sterling

Danny Rose admits he never realised the level of “dislike” Liverpool supporters have for Raheem Sterling.

Sterling was given a typically hostile reception at Anfield last Sunday, as the Reds beat Manchester City 3-1.

The former Liverpool man cut an angry figure throughout, culminating in a late bust-up with Joe Gomez.

That spilled over into international duty, with the pair again coming to blows on Monday.

Sterling was subsequently dropped for Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro, but no action was taken against Gomez.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Rose admitted Sunday’s match made him realise Liverpool supporters’ feelings towards Sterling:

It’s probably the first time I have sat back and actually realised and took note of how much the Liverpool fans dislike him.

I take that for granted whenever I’m watching Raheem. I think he just gets on with it and maybe it had a part to play in whatever happened.

While Sterling is undoubtedly disliked by a number of Reds fans, there are still plenty who admire him greatly.

The booing that he experiences every time he returns to Anfield is partly done to get into his head.

Sterling has visibly shrunk there a number of times in the past, so it is a way of gaining an advantage.

Opinion on the 24-year-old is far more split than Rose thinks.
