Scotland manager Clarke defends Robertson after recent criticism

Andy Robertson couldn’t be in a happier place at Liverpool currently, with the left-back earning rave reviews for his performances.

He has suffered different fortunes for Scotland, however, receiving criticism for his recent displays as captain.

Robertson was believed to be left hurt by the reaction during the last international break, even deleting his Twitter account, although it wasn’t proven that online abuse was the reason for that.

The Liverpool star has been defended by Scotland boss Steve Clarke, who told The Scotsman that the criticism coming his skipper’s way is harsh:

Listen, when you don’t win matches you are going to be crucified.

Andy is experienced enough to realise that. He is the captain and the one who gets it.

But it is unfair. It’s unfair to single out Andy Robertson and say that he should take the criticism.

Everyone should take the criticism. It’s a collective thing. I have spoken to Andy since, we had a good chat and he is fine

Robertson will lead his country in their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Russia (October 10th) and San Marino (October 13th).

The negativity that Robertson has had to put up with is hugely unfair, but unfortunately, it comes with the territory of playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs.

The Scotland supporters expect the 25-year-old to be as influential for his country as he is at Liverpool, but that is almost impossible, considering the calibre of players alongside him.

Darren Fletcher used to earn similar criticism during his Manchester United days, when he was his country’s most high-profile footballer.

Robertson is a strong enough character to deal with the situation and he will be desperate to prove a point over the next two games.
