Shaqiri “downbeat” over game time – does he deserve more?

Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri has told Teleclub he has been left feeling ”downbeat” about the number of minutes he has had on the pitch this season for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The 27-year-old, who signed for the Reds last summer from Stoke City had to be patient for game time last season. When the winter fixtures came thick and fast he more than stood up to the challenge of making the midfield position his own.

Shaqiri has been limited to minutes from the bench this season, coming on late against Newcastle and Burnley.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, he refused to blame Klopp for his lack of time on the pitch and insisted that he is very happy with life at Anfield.

It is not easy for me, of course I am a little downbeat. You have to be able to handle that and you have to accept it, I was always still in the squad. You cannot ask the coach to play every match.

Despite being limited to the bench, the Swiss international has set his sights on ending Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a league title this season.

I feel very comfortable here. We have a great coach, a great club. There’s a family feel. I hope we can bring the Premier League back to Liverpool after 30 years.

Although Shaqiri has struggled for game time this season, I don’t see it as a concern because of how many fixtures Liverpool will have to play between now and Christmas.

With the upcoming League Cup fixture against MK Dons, Shaqiri will surely get an opportunity to stake a claim for one of the advance midfield roles.

The situation was similar to the one when he first arrived at Anfield, he had to be patient for a consecutive run of game in the team.

Given that football can change so quickly with injuries and form, I’m sure we will see a lot more of him as the season progresses.
