Rodgers must be given time, it’s not a choice that anyone but FSG can make, and that will never change. The constant downfall in support to the man who restored the face of Liverpool football club is also leading into a constant downfall through the league table, plus the morale and support that this ‘powerful’ club lacks this season.
Whilst Rodgers may not have a trophy cabinet to use as a backup, we cannot forget the style of play that he bought to this club last season, the constant outbursts of pace lead to a secure second place in the league table and restored the heart of the club once more, our highest league finish since the 2008 to 2009 Benitez days.
Many people of opposite support may argue that Liverpool’s talisman Luis Suarez lifted the club single handily last season, but let’s not forget who the second highest scorer was and who was at the helm of the magnificent diamond, scoring and assisting game after game.
And are those two players still at the club?
The point is that Liverpool were far from a ‘one man team’ last season, and the confidence and belief that Rodgers gave his players at times was memorable and must be recognised, especially youngsters such as Raheem Sterling and Jon Flanagan who never gave up for one minute and drove their engines to their maximum in order to help achieve what they did. Who would have ever though that Liverpool would have come so close to winning the league with a ‘bunch of kids’? Exactly, no one did, and that’s the point that we are missing, we aimed for top 4 last season and ended up with a lot more than planned, adding more and more to the grand total that Rodgers would have to spend in the transfer window.
However one thing that is clear is Rodgers is a man who aims to build for the future and in years to come many may look back to the 2014 summer transfer window and praise Rodgers for giving raw talent a chance and not following the path of clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City.
Diamond, diamond, diamond, it’s the only thing that people seem to find as a personal attachment and constantly use against Rodgers. We have a world class striker in Daniel Sturridge who is currently out due to an unfortunate thigh injury and we have the controversial figure of Mario Balotelli who is very much ‘struggling’ to find the back of the net whilst playing as the lone striker with no support. An isolated player is a useless one and when Sturridge returns the firepower will be restored.
It’s time we began to think positively about Rodgers and get behind the man who put his career on the line at Swansea to manage one of Europe’s top club, a job that demands so much from any man brave enough to proceed. Rodgers got his signings wrong in terms of the current season and looked ahead to the future, and mistakes must be capitalised upon, but not up to the extent where ‘Rodgers out’ looms above Anfield.
January will be a key month for Rodgers, and the signings must be spot on, a new full-back plus Goalkeeper are key and clearing out the ‘deadwood’ such as Skrtel and Johnson must be done, it’s removing players from the squad that Rodgers may look slightly weak at being able to do. Other than that there is not a lot more that we can do other than to back the club and the signings that have been made, things will get better they just require time.
Finally, putting all of this together, it is clear to see that many of our key players are either injured or simply not match fit, and when combining our strongest possible XI it is fair to say that we still stand a great chance of qualifying for the champion’s league once more.
Our strongest XI will consist of the following: Mignolet (GK)/potential new signing (GK), Toure (CB)/potential new signing (CB), Sakho (CB)/potential new signing (CB), Manquillo (RB), Moreno (LB)/Flanagan (LB/RB), Can (CDM)/Gerrard (CDM)/Henderson (CM), Lallana (RM), Coutinho (LM), Sterling (CAM), Sturridge (ST), and Balotelli (ST)/Origi (ST).
It is clear that we do have a strong squad and players such as Flanagan, Balotelli, Sturridge, and Sakho are yet to return from injury.
“At the end of a storm. There’s a golden sky”, and we will see that Golden sky once more, and that ‘once more’ is closer than we think, Rodgers just needs the time and reassurance from his 12th man, the Kop.
