“Suarez is a world class player, with world class problems”
In all of the madness that ensued in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea, this was probably the best quote I heard/read. Yes, he messed up. He royally messed up. He will be banned; there is no shadow of doubt in that. The question is how long?
Liverpool have 4 games left of this campaign, and common sense would be for the FA to dish out a ban for the rest of this season.
It is going to be pretty depressing reading for a while if you are a Liverpool fan.
So as the press are having their field day with the “Hannibal Suarez” headlines and the pundits and ex pro’s are sticking their heads up to have their say to earn some extra money. Just try and put it into context will you.
This has happened on the same week of the Boston tragedy, the Texas fertilizer explosion and the passing of the amazing Anne Williams. People have lost loved ones this week, atrocities have happened. At the end of the day, this pails in significance.
When you get a chance to turn off your Twitter and put away your laptop; take a step back and think about it, Liverpool FC now have themselves in a very good position. (Before you start to comment and instantly dismiss, give me a few minutes to explain.)
Luis Suarez now owes us, and when I say “us”, I mean the fans of Liverpool Football Club. Unlike the racism scandal there is no so called “media conspiracy”, no ‘us vs them’ scenario, there is no grey. It is 100% his own fault and best of all he knows it.
At the moment, it is hard to see, but this will calm down. Just look at the Ryan Giggs and Imogen Thomas scandal. It was in the press everywhere from April to May of 2011, you couldn’t move without seeing it. Then by the time the Premier League kicked off again in 2012, it was like it never happened. If I were in charge of dealing with this mess, then I would tell Suarez to get away from Liverpool. Go start your holiday now and go back to Uruguay. Get him and his family away from the glare of the press and come back for pre-season in July.
Now this is the first blessing in disguise.
Suarez has played pretty much non-stop since coming back from his nine game ban just over 18 months ago. His performances in the last 4 games have the look of a man that is jaded.
On Sunday he completed 67% of his passes, completed 3 out of 12 dribbles against the Chelsea defence and his pressing was not what it could be. Yes he scored and assisted with an amazing pass to Sturridge, but it doesn’t take an expert to see the player is tired.
This summer, he is due to join up with Uruguay for their qualifying game for the World Cup. He won’t play though, as he is suspended after picking up a yellow card in their last match. Also, in that game he punched an opposition player and is facing further punishment from FIFA for that. (I bet you forgot about that in the last 24 hours, hey!). If Suarez get’s the expected 3 game ban, it could mean that he misses this summer’s Confederations Cup tournament , which Uruguay are competing in.
So that could mean Suarez might miss the whole summer programme, and get a full 3-month break from football.
Secondly, for the first time in a long time, Liverpool have the upper hand in the constant transfer rumours. Before Sunday there wouldn’t be many fans that would of stood in his way if he asked to leave the club this summer. Now, there is no way that Suarez can turn around in the summer and ask to go. To be fair to Suarez he will not want his final act as a Liverpool player to be “bite-gate”.
Sunday rendered a lot of Liverpool fans speechless. I thought I had seen it all with Suarez. However, I do not see why Liverpool need to get rid of the player. So many Liverpool fans came out saying he has to go and he should never play for Liverpool again. Why? Fair enough he has bitten a player, but you seem to forget that Liverpool bought the player after he was enthralled in a similar scandal in Holland. The same fans were not demanding Liverpool not to sign him then.
One of the plus points in all of this has been the swift response from the people in charge. Within 3 hours of the final whistle going, an apology from Suarez had appeared on his Twitter feed and an condemnation from Rodgers was on the official website. Lessons have been learnt obviously from past events and that is always good to see.
So for the next few weeks, if you easily bite back to rival fans jibes, just remember, it is only a game. There is much more important things to life (go and read my other article to calm you down, http://www.readliverpoolfc.com/the-modern-day-liverpool-fan)
At least the Luis Suarez song takes a new twist. “He just can’t eat enough”
