These Liverpool fans react as Carragher defends Owen’s Man United move

Jamie Carragher has stuck up former teammate Michael Owen, following his controversial move to Manchester United in 2009.

The ex-Liverpool striker joined their biggest rivals five years after leaving Anfield, tarnishing his legacy in the eyes of many.

Speaking to the Mirror, however, Carragher has criticised those who lay into Owen, saying their treatment of him is “out of order”:

There’s no doubt, in speaking to Michael, he’s been desperate to do this book and get a lot off his chest for a while.

That is mainly down to his decision to leave Liverpool and, years later, join Manchester United.

I must say I think some of the stick from Liverpool fans is bang out of order considering what he did for the club and the reaction other players get who did nothing for Liverpool.

These Liverpool supporters have reacted to Carragher’s comments on Twitter.

@tinamreddington: “Not interested in his excuses as to why he went to the mancs he did and now he is paying the price any other club it would not have been a problem.”

@UBSixT: “Definitely agree with Carragher… his personality doesnt come into it…he was a red from the beginning, a member of the youth Cup winning side..he was a prolific striker at his best and carried the team for at least three of the seasons he played.”

@brett_walton: “Yeah but he signed for Man Utd which is pretty unforgivable.”

@PeteC16977390: “Did Owen go to LFC’s most hated rival in Man Utd yes or no? I’m sure he did and of his own free will. So he deserves all the aggro he gets from LFC fans for doing so.”

Although Owen is never going to win round some Liverpool fans, Carragher’s comments do have some truth to them.

Owen was a great servant to the Reds between 1998 and 2004, single-handedly winning the 2001 FA Cup final and scoring 158 goals in 297 appearances.

His move to United was asking for trouble, though, and the former striker can’t be shocked at the backlash that has since come his way.

Both sides of the story deserve to be heard, however, and all is revealed in Owen’s new book, ‘Reboot – My Life, My Time’, which was released on Thursday.
