Top 10 Coutinho moments

10) Goal v Arsenal – 21st December 2014

Coutinho managed to break the deadlock as half-time was approaching. The Brazilian was given the ball 20 yards from goal, and with a quick shuffle to his right, he managed to find space and accurately drill a shot on goal which went in via the post.

The Reds drew that match 2-2 thanks to a late Martin Skrtel equaliser.

9) Goal v Swansea – 17th February 2013

Signed from Inter Milan for £8.5 million, Coutinho made his home debut against Brendan Rodgers’ old team Swansea City.

It was a very impressive debut as Coutinho wooed the crowd with his evident talent.

He was rewarded with a debut goal when he collected a Luis Suarez pass and drove into the box before firing home a shot. The ‘keeper got a hand to it but it was not enough. (At 2:21 in the video)

8) Performance v Wigan – 2nd March 2013

This was a match in which Luis Suárez won the plaudits with a hat-trick but Coutinho’s display should not go unnoticed.

He supplied the cross for Stewart Downing to head in from close range and then played a perfectly timed through ball for Suarez to score his first of the day.

Rodgers said about his performance: “He owns the ball, he was born with the ball at his feet.”

7) Goal v Blackburn – 8th April 2015

This was a very tight affair as Blackburn were standing firm against the favourites. With the match heading towards extra-time, Coutinho took matters into his own hands.

His initial corner was cleared but only as far as himself, he then played a brilliant one-two with Jordan Henderson and angled in a brilliant finish leaving the ‘keeper with no chance.

It was the winner that day and Liverpool progressed to Wembley to play Aston Villa in the semi-finals.

6) Performance v Chelsea in Capital One Cup (both legs) – 20th and 27th January 2015

A midfield of Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas and Jon Obi Mikel were unable to handle the Brazilian in both legs of this Capital One Cup tie.

Coutinho was unlucky to not score as he had several efforts thwarted by Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

But his overall performance was a pleasure to watch as his pace and trickery caused problems for a solid Chelsea defence.

5) Performance v Newcastle United – 27th April 2013

Liverpool hammered the Magpies 6-0 and although Coutinho was not on the score sheet, he earned rave reviews from the fans.

The Brazilian international was the architect in that game and his direct approach also made him untouchable.

He was playing through balls that were inch-perfect, setting players free left, right and centre.

4) Goal v Bolton – 5th February 2015

Liverpool were up against it in this fourth round replay at the Macron Stadium. Raheem Sterling had equalised for the Reds and the match was heading towards extra time.

But Coutinho had other ideas.

Receiving the ball 20 yards from goal, he cut in on his right foot and curled home a peach to win the game for Liverpool.

3) Goal v Southampton – 22nd February 2015

This was a match that was going to really push Liverpool to the limits; they were up against a well-organised and tactically aware Southampton side.

But Coutinho managed to calm any nerves inside the first three minutes. He collected Lazar Markovic’s pass and took aim from all of 25 yards. The ball thundered off the cross bar beyond Fraser Forster.

Rodgers on that goal: “Philippe Coutinho’s goal was a wonderful goal in terms of the system of how we play, working the ball to the sides and drawing players out. It’s a wonderful strike.”

2) Goal v Manchester City – 1st March 2015

Another match, another screamer from Coutinho. It was evident that the young maestro was going through extra training to improve his shooting and Liverpool fans were being rewarded with stunner after stunner.

On the left hand side, he made space to move away from Elaquim Mangala and was able to unleash a belter of a shot.

A powerful strike that left Joe Hart with very little chance. The 22-year-old was on his way to staging his own ‘Goal of the Season’ competition.

1) Goal v Manchester City – 13th April 2014

On the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, an emotional Anfield were primed for a crucial match.

This was the game that was supposed to have won the Liverpool the title, and Steven Gerrard let out a rallying cry to his teammates at the final whistle.

But that sort of optimism would not have been possible without Coutinho’s brilliant winner.

After City had come back from being 2-0 down, the match was heading for a draw.

What should have been a straightforward clearance from Vincent Kompany was sliced towards Coutinho in the box. Although the ball was slightly behind him, the Brazilian midfielder managed to wrap his foot around it and fire it past a despairing Hart dive.

Martin Tyler seemed to enjoy that one too. Anfield was rocking.
