Southampton defender and long-term Liverpool transfer target Virgil van Dijk believes that the Reds will challenge for Champions League success this season, speaking to Squawka.
Jurgen Klopp was extremely keen on signing the Dutch international during the summer in what was one of the most talked about transfer stories of the year, but failed to land the defender at Anfield as he stayed put at St Mary’s.
The Saints were close to reporting the Reds over an alleged illegal approach, before Liverpool bosses quickly apologised to Southampton chiefs, all before van Dijk handed in a transfer request.
However, speaking at the FIFA 18 launch, van Dijk expects either Liverpool or Manchester City to go furthest out of the five English sides in the competition.
When asked about the potential of Liverpool winning the competition, van Dijk said:
It’s always going to be difficult, anything can happen, especially if you are the big English club.
