“We got it wrong” – Johnson apologises to Evra over Suarez incident

Former Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson has apologised to Patrice Evra regarding the racism incident involving Luis Suarez.

Johnson has spoken out following Jamie Carragher’s public apology to the Frenchman during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show earlier this week.

The Liverpool squad wore ‘Suarez 7’ shirts following the incident in 2011 but when looking back at it, Johnson feels that maybe it wasn’t the best idea.

As quoted on the Liverpool Echo, Johnson said:

I think the timing of it all was wrong, as Carra rightly says. There was no sort of meeting or chat about it. As the ban was so close I guess the timing was wrong.

I think we got it wrong. The ban was only a couple of days so it was almost like they reacted too quick and didn’t let the dust settle. They tried to support him too soon I think.

I would not be friends with a racist. I would be the first to turn my back on him. I think due to the timing I have to apologise to Patrice as well. I think it was all a bit too soon to the actual incident.

Johnson’s honesty is admirable. To come out and admit a mistake isn’t easy for anyone, so hats off to Carragher and Johnson for doing so.

It seems as if the players in the squad at that moment wore the shirts simply because they were there and felt like they had to, rather than passionately supporting Suarez in the case.

Johnson’s feeling that it was too quick of a reaction is also a very fair comment, because they should maybe have waited until a proper thorough investigation was complete before choosing their stance.
