Why missing out on Bellingham may not be such bad news for Liverpool

Borussia Dortmund have ‘won the race’ to sign Jude Bellingham, according to Sport Bild, as translated by Sport Witness.

The Birmingham City star is one of the most highly-rated young English players, scoring four goals and adding two assists in the Championship this season.

Liverpool have been one of a host of clubs tipped to make a move for the 16-year-old, but this latest update suggests he will move to Dortmund.

A summer move is thought to be on the cards, with the Bundesliga giants paying €35 million for his signature – a club record fee.

While missing out on Bellingham looks like a blow on face value, it is far from the end of the world for Liverpool. Were the teenage wonderkid to join the Reds, it could potentially block Curtis Jones’ path to the first-team.

While the pair don’t always play in identical roles – they can excel in midfield or further forward – it is hard to see how both could have regularly made the squad alongside so many senior teammates.

I think Jones all the attributes to make it at Liverpool, possessing physical strength, outrageous natural talent and ever-improving end product, as highlighted by a recent eight-minute hat-trick for the U23s.

With the likes of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum in and around the latter stages of their careers, Jones could get his chance to be a regular in the near future. If he continues to develop at the rate he is, the Reds will soon forget about Bellingham.
