Liverpool 1-0 Everton: Four findings

It was end-to-end stuff in the derby, but Merseyside remains red. Liverpool pulled out a stunning last-second 1-0 victory against their crosstown rivals at Anfield.

With chances aplenty for both sides, ending the first half 0-0 proved stunning. The adrenaline-fuelled fixture was played at a pace that was fast, fair, and furious for 90-plus minutes. Both teams pressed high, looked to force things going forward, and required big moments from their goalkeepers.

The second half picked up much where the first ended. While there were moments that the match grew spicy and approached the edge, it never completely bubbled over. The pace and power on display bordered only overwhelming. It was a cracking match from start to staggering finish.

This derby delivered all kinds of drama, including an absolutely unreal ending which saw Everton surrender a stunning goal in front of the Kop. After Virgil van Dijk completely mishit an attempt on goal, Jordan Pickford was forced into a howler of truly spectacular proportion.

In his effort to tip the ball over the bar he inadvertently pushed the ball straight up, forcing it to bounce off the crossbar and back into play, where Divock Origi pounced to head it home.

So unlikely and bizarre was the ending, this one will go down in derby history. For a Red with an appreciation of irony, it just might be the best end to a Merseyside derby ever.

Here are four findings to the match.
