Germany’s Under-21 coach Horst Hrubesch has revealed that Liverpool have told him that his player Emre Can will take over Steven Gerrard’s midfield role at Anfield.
Gerrard‘s Liverpool career finished at the end of the 2014-15 season and he is now heading to the USA to join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy.
Despite signing James Milner from Manchester City, who reportedly wanted to be played as a centre midfielder, Hrubesch says the Reds are ready to hand the responsibility of replacing Gerrard to Emre Can.
Speaking to the German news agency SID, Hrubesch said:
“I’ve just been to Liverpool. There we were told that Emre will soon assume Gerrard’s role in midfield.”
Can is currently with the German Under-21 squad in the Czech Republic where they are about to compete in the European Under-21 Championships.
Brendan Rodgers used Can as part of a three-man defence last term when he changed formation to a 3-4-3.
He also deployed him at right-back, but it appears that the German will be predominantly used a midfielder during the upcoming season.
