A very modern rivalry born of a genuine dislike of each other. A contest usually settled by fine margins and mired in controversy.
Perhaps this will be diluted this season with a sudden lack of the decade-long antagonists. No Jose Mourinho, no Steven Gerrard, no Fernando Torres, no John Terry (probably). Although there’s still Diego Costa. The FA may as well start warming up their disciplinary panel now.
Stamford Bridge has rarely been a happy hunting ground for The Reds. Wins there in the Premier League have been few and far between, which makes any win there seem more memorable.
Even when Chelsea were rubbish, Liverpool went 14 years without a league win at The Bridge. Before Bruno Cheyrou fired them to victory in January 2004, their previous victory had been a resounding 5-2 victory there in December 1989.
Since this extremely barren spell, and ironically since Chelsea have become regulars in the Premier League’s top fout, Liverpool have enjoyed more consistent success at Stamford Bridge.
