Ahead of Liverpool’s trip up to St. James’ Park, we spoke to the editor of @ReadNewcastle. With many sides around Liverpool dropping points this weekend already, it’s vital Liverpool carry on their brilliant run under Jurgen Klopp.
1. Newcastle have, in all honesty, had a horrendous start to the season. What do you put that down to, and can you see your side getting out of this?
So far, it just looks like the players want their wage packets and that’s it. They don’t seem to care about winning or losing. The only way I can see us getting out of this is if we heavily invest in some Premier League proven players in January. A new manager wouldn’t go amiss either.
2. Steve McLaren has come under a lot of scrutiny of late. What’s your take on the situation and what do you hope the outcome will be?
Yes, he is, and rightly so. I sometimes feel for him, though. The players need to shoulder some of the responsibility, also. The reality is he undeservedly got the job in the first place. For a new manager, I’d love Brendan Rodgers to come in!
3. As a side, what would you say Newcastle’s strengths are?
We don’t have too many at the moment! But, I would say that we have pace that can prove useful on the counter-attack. That would be our best option if we’re going to get something from the game.
4. What would you say the side’s weaknesses are?
I could go on, and on, and on. The incompetent defence is our biggest problem. It’s no coincidence we’ve conceded the most goals in the league! Also, we have no stand-out central midfielders and therefore can’t control the tempo of games.
5. For Liverpool fans, who perhaps don’t watch Newcastle as much as you do, who should we be fearful of?
Ayoze Perez. He has been the shining light in a very, very dark season for us. Always works for the team and is so creative and enthusiastic on the ball.
6. Who are you scared of from Liverpool’s squad?
I’d have to go with Ibe at the minute. He has filled Sterling’s boots brilliantly and has torn multiple teams to shreds in recent weeks. His trickery and pace will cause us many problems.
7. Finally, score prediction?
I’ll go 3-0 to Liverpool. I can’t see us getting anything out of the game, unfortunately.
