Four Findings: Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool

In yet another clear test of consistency, Liverpool headed to the capital for a Friday night clash at Stamford Bridge, where they defeated Chelsea 1-2.

After squeezing the home side into their half and dominating them in the first 45 minutes with pace and precision, the second half saw the Merseysiders dig in and hang onto a well-earned victory.

It may only be match day five in the league but expectations remain high for Antonio Conte’s Blues, who will undoubtedly be better than their miserable last campaign. Yet, Liverpool played them off their own pitch in the first half in a swirling flurry that overwhelmed them. The only thing that could trip up the Reds would be themselves.

While Liverpool struggled to regain the form after the break and made enough mistakes to let Chelsea back into the match, they remained relentless as a unit, working hard without the ball. Despite struggling to maintain the kind of possession they had previously commanded, Liverpool showed some developing defensive strength even after conceding. While Dejan Lovren returned, his partnership with Joel Matip is still very new but the signs are promising.

Even the loss of Roberto Firmino to a minor injury concern was not enough to stop Liverpool’s assault. Philippe Coutinho filled in and the team kept ticking.

Here are four findings from the match.
