Heading into the final league fixtures, Liverpool’s only hope is to claw their way as high up the table as they can, knowing that a Champions League berth lies wholly on the result of their May 18th Europa League final.
Thus, coming on the heels of Thursday night’s dramatic destruction of Villarreal, a late Sunday match against Watford was always going to be considerably more low-key.
Still, the Reds prevailed 2-0 over the visiting Hornets at Anfield.
There were another eight changes to the line-up but, unlike last weekend, aided by playing at home, this mix delivered a sound result.
Despite being an end of the season affair, Liverpool were able to stay a step ahead of Watford without really getting out of third gear.
For their part, Watford who tonked the Reds 3-0 earlier in the season in one of the more humbling results of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, did not make it altogether easy.
Odion Ighalo nearly made noise on a couple of occasions, yet, the result never seemed in doubt.
The Reds raised the tempo just high enough to keep Watford at bay. Liverpool seemed determined to reinforce a fortress at Anfield.
This was the 14th straight unbeaten home result for the Merseysiders. In fact, the last loss to Stoke City was inconsequential with the Reds already assuring advancement to the League Cup final.
Klopp has now lost only three of the 24 fixtures he has managed at Anfield and with Chelsea arriving on Wednesday, another opportunity to restore the home advantage looms.
Here are four findings from the match.
