Four Findings: Liverpool 3-1 Everton

Four Findings: Liverpool 3-1 Everton

After a feisty start to the “friendly” derby, the irony fell away and things fell very much in line as Liverpool outclassed and outlasted Everton. Eventually, the Reds coasted to a 3-1 victory at Anfield.

A stirring tribute to the late Ronnie Moran set the stage for Jurgen Klopp to become the first Liverpool manager to win his first three straight Merseyside derbies as the club extended their unbeaten streak to 13 matches over their crosstown rivals. The Gaffer’s reaction clearly showed just how deeply he understands what this result means for the table, supporters, and club.

The win may not be without its costs as referee Anthony Taylor should face some consequences after a wretched officiating performance. Derby or not, this match should not finished with eleven aside. Somehow, Ross Barkley avoided a yellow card after a late and reckless challenge on Emre Can. Determining who will remain fit for Wednesday will be no short order for the training staff.

Still, the Reds responded with an early goal from Sadio Mane’s lithe diagonal run and cool, cutting finish against the grain for the first lead. The early lead was precisely what the Reds needed upon returning after the international break and it allowed them to wrestle control of the match, despite conceding from shabby set-piece defending.

Ultimately, Liverpool never quite hit their stride but fought through the afternoon. Some excellent individual efforts saw them get on top and extend Everton’s misery, dashing the Toffees chances of climbing up the table.

Here are my four findings from the match.
