Liverpool wrapped up their preparations for the new season with their final warm-up match against another Serie A side. The Reds rose above Torino 3-1 at Anfield, with the real season to begin on Sunday.
Liverpool finished their preseason winning all but one game. A final tuneup, this match once again showcased a host of things to be excited about.
There are signs that suggest a strength has been growing all summer long. There were stretches where the players pinged the ball about the pitch at a pace that serves as a reminder of how devastating the Reds can be.
While Torino looked as though they were ready to play a proper match, Liverpool may have had one eye on Sunday but still managed to handle proceedings. The home side started strong, creating chances early and often.
Within 20 minutes, Fabinho’s missed penalty did not matter as Roberto Firmino scored. Minutes later, Gini Wijnaldum doubled the advantage with his second goal in as many games. Torino pulled one back when Nat Phillips fell victim to lack of experience, getting sucked out of position by a clever Andrea Belotti, who headed home.
The second half saw a number of changes, including both Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge coming on. Both found themselves with chances to score. However, only Sturridge continued to find the net, finishing his strongest preseason in years. The striker has been one of a number of positives heading into matchday one.
