Soon after Liverpool’s fully-deserved 2-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup, Jurgen Klopp retirated his anger at the loss and conceded responsibility for the team’s lacklustre performance.
Whilst it’s good to see Klopp show some modesty and take the defeat on the chin, it simply cannot compensate for what was, a dreadful performance from an under-strength Liverpool side.
The defeat caps a miserable week for the Reds – they lost their unbeaten home record [which spanned twenty-two games] at home to then-bottom placed Swansea City. That was followed by a heartbreaking, but again, deserved, 1-0 defeat to Southampton in the EFL Cup.
The loss to Wolves signals the end of harbouring hopes with regards to domestic success this season. The dark, dispelling aura around Anfield is beginning to intensify fast. Lose against top-of-the-table Chelsea in midweek and the Reds could potentially slip out of the top four and see anyone associated with the club staring at the rotten tomatoes.
Klopp admitted he got things wrong, and I’ve taken a look at the things that I think the manager, in hindsight, will know were mistakes:
