Liverpool cruised into the third round of the EFL Cup courtesy of an emphatic 5-0 victory against Championship outfit Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Reds fielded a strong XI, with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi all starting, while Joel Matip was handed his competitive debut.
The away side opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a neat, close-range finish from Origi before Firmino’s header doubled their advantage.
The result was beyond all doubt when the ball deflected in off Burton defender Tom Naylor on the hour mark.
Substitute Daniel Sturridge notched his first goal of the season with a tap-in from James Milner’s low cross before expertly blasting home the Reds’ fifth.
