Liverpool Player Ratings: Southampton (A)

While a 0-0 scoreline seemed an unlikely one, Liverpool played well but lacked that Swiss timepiece synchronisation that saw them dispatch good teams with relative ease.

Southampton is a good side, make no mistake about that. More than the Reds will struggle sneak away from St Mary’s with all three points. They were content to drop deep and absorb Liverpool’s attack, knowing how quickly they might be exposed. They were disciplined and difficult.

The international break may have been a bit more disruptive than expected with Liverpool struggling to re-establish their relentless, scything rhythm. That final pass proved a little more difficult find and when they did find it, the finishing fell edgeless.

Jurgen Klopp may have even relied a little too long on his favourite selections, as an earlier change may have prompted the desired effect and secured a result.

Still, the Reds did not play at all poorly. The only shame is that in each clean sheet claimed, the Reds have offered their opposition one as well.
